Since the device ignores its saved configuration on boot, you are able to access its configuration modes without passwords. You will then interrupt the boot process and change the configuration register value to prevent the appliance from reading its stored configuration at boot. You will power-cycle your appliance by unplugging it at the power strip and plugging it back in. This procedure requires physical access to the device. Instead, you will gain access to the appliance via the console port and reset the password(s) to known values. Today, such passwords are encrypted and not actually recoverable. Ok, if at some point I run no shutdown on the interfaces and then copy run startup, subsequent reloads seem to bring the interface. One thing that's kind of odd is that even if I run switchport access vlan 1 under int e0/1, it never seems to save that and always leaves it empty. Here's the interface portion of my config: interface Vlan1 Kind of freaked out to deploy this thing somewhere for fear that the interfaces won't come up after a reboot. Reboots, configs all there, but interfaces are down.
I then ran copy run startup followed by reload. At the prompt hit no the "interactive setup", enable then conf t then pasted my config in. Write erase to blow away my config, reload and said no to save changes. For some reason, I have to run no shutdown on each real physical interface to get them to come up after a reload.
